ford 3000 power steering problem

I cleaned the hydraulic actuator block in the steering column and i need to know how tight i should tighten the upper bearing nut.
 
I don't think there is an actual torque setting for that.
The way I do it is run the nut down untill it is snug against the warpy washer. Then use a wrench and give it another 1/4 turn or so. You do not want to completely flatten that warpy washer as that is a spring that allows you your up/down movement in the block.
Make sure you use a punch and dent the thin top part of the nut into the milled slot on the shaft. That is what keeps the nut from loosening on you.
I don't know if that makes any sense but if it doesn't post back and I will try to say it another way.
 
Thanks for the info, Ultradog.I still dont get it, because the shaft moves up or down therefore the nut can be tightened in different locations
on the shaft
 
Do you have a manual?
Manual describes it thus:
[i:654c4848f0]"Place large race of upper thrust bearing on shaft against valve, then install bearing retainer and small race. Place spring washer on shaft against small thrust bearing race with cup side of washer towards race. Install new locknut.
Thighten nut so all end play is removed. Then loosen nut 1/6 turn and stake nut to locating slot in steering shaft as shown in figure 10"[/i:654c4848f0]
 
PS.. 1/6 a turn is 60 degrees. that should help you pin down EXACTLY how much to back the nut off from snug.

make a witness mark ifyou have to on the nut and then use a fixedframe of reference and back thenut off 60 degrees. in plainspeak that's 1/3 of a half turn :) shpould be able to eyeball that towithin +/- 3 degrees
