ford 3000 pto type

I am looking at pictures of a 3000 8 speed, but there is no information as to whether the pto is a transmission, live or independent pto. Is there a visible external difference on the left side of the tranmission to distinguish between a transmission pto and the other two types?

I don't want to have to drive 40 miles to check it out and I am not sure if the seller knows the type or the serial/production information on the right side. The tractor is going on bid and I really don't want one with a transmission pto.

The 8 speed model 3000 tractors submitted for testing at Nebraska had live ptos controlled by a 2 stage clutch. Clutch all the way down, everything stops. Clutch half way
down, tractor stops but pto keeps running. These were test numbers 888 gas and 881 diesel.

The problem is that the 3000 was offered with all three different pto types. I have looked at the NHC parts diagrams, but cannot determine if there is any external difference or apperance of the engagement levers. I may have to make the drive to the auction, but really don't want to under the current distancing/quarantine situation.

With my luck the bell housing will have so much paint/corrosion it I could not read the production data. I would probably have to crank it and drive it. "Oh bother" said said Pooh as he donned his mask and headed out the door.

You said you are looking at
pictures. Have you even tried to
call and ask about the PTO? Hard
to believe no one around the
tractor can't start it to see
what kind of PTO it has or get
the numbers off it.

I am going to try to call tomorrow, but I don't expect to get in touch with someone knowledgeable since there are a large number of tractors on the block. I was hoping there was a Ford expert on the forum who might know and chime in.

The 3000 chassis with gear type
transmission was not offered with
Independent pto. Only live or
transmission type
That said, though the 8 speed
transmission was offered with either
trans or live pto it is fairly uncommon
to find an 8 sp that is not live.
In my years of playing with these 3
banger Fords I have never seen one.

Thanks Ultradog MN,

I was finally able to check a diagram and it did show a difference in the engagement lever location between independent and the others. The only remaining item was the clevis length and it looks like the clevis is too short for the live pto, but I could be wrong. I am going to try to call, but I trust the gurus here and multiple input rather than one person on a phone line.

If you mean the clevis on the front end
of the clutch rod, I was going to mention
that but it's kind of a can of worms.
On the older 4 cyl Hundred Series
tractors a two hole clevis is a good
external indicator of the two stage
clutch.
Not so on the Thousands. Older ones -
1965-68 or 9? they used that two hole
clevis. Later ones they did not.
Then again some folks with a late 3000 or
an early 80s 3600 say they have the
double clevis which I kinda doubt but who
knows?
One thing I've learned about these Fords
is to Not say never or always cause you
end up with egg on your face so I didn't
mention the clevis.
The only Positive way to tell is with the
model # which is Hand Stamped (not cast
into)
on the bell housing just above and to the
rear of the starter. Bring a jacknife to
scrape some paint/crud to see it.
There is a good website to help you
decipher it at the link below.

Thanks again. I was not sure how consistant that clevis information is. It may be acceptable to scrape the bell housing, but I am a little reserved about doing it to someone's property even if its for sale. What the hey. A buyer has some right to know what he is getting.

This one is old enough to have the vents on the side of the hood. I have a 4000 (1968) that has these and a newer one (1973) that does not have them.
