Ford 3000 tachometer

Hey guys my ford 3000 I just bought has the 12v conversion on it generator to alternator and the alternator on it does not have a tach drive so is there another way to hook up my tachometer to somewhere on the engine so I can see what rpm I m running or do I have to replace the alternator on it with one that has tach drive?

If it is a later 3000, it may have the newer style block that allows the oil pump driven tach sender like the 3600 series used, but if you go that route you will need to replace the instrument cluster as the later style drive turns in the opposite direction from the earlier generator tach drive.

According to serial number it s a 1967 I m guessing that s early. So am I too assume I have no other choice but to replace the alternator with the tach drive version?

A tach is nice but not a big deal really.
And if your tractor still has the original
tach/cluster there is about 90% chance the
rpms and hour meter no longer work anyway.
They were notoriously failure prone.
I haven't had a working tach in 15 years.
About the only thing you might want a tach
for is setting 540 rpms at the pto for a
mower but even for that, 540 is not a magic
number. Just run it about 3/4 throttle when
mowing and you'll be good. I'll bet most
guys here wouldn't replace a good working
alternator just to have a tach.
But it's your tractor and your call...

Yes if I was going to keep it I wouldn t need a tach but I know someone will nitpick over the small things like the tach. So replacing the alternator is my only option.

A 67 model you won t be able to convert to engine driven tach
Tach drive alternator or go back to a generator is about your only choice
I ve got a few with the tach drive alternator and some converted to engine drive
The ones with alternator drive work ok but do read 2-300 rpm fast at pto speed, I used a hand held digital tach to find 540 pto speed and then put a small dab of paint on the tach glass were the needle was pointing as a reference mark
On the 5000 the tach needle is at 2300 when the pto is doing 540 rpm, I know the engine is only running 1900 and not over reving
If anyone else drives the tractor I tell them the tach is off and to set it it at the reference mark for correct pto speed

You can get alt's with a tach drive. This site has or had Delco 10si kits, or find an older 10dn that requires an external
regulator and put that on. As others have mentioned... the tach will not read correctly due to pulley sizes and I find the cluster
itself to be rather poor quality compared to the stewert werner units originally spec'd.

The only way you can do the tach conversion to the newer cluster is if the engine has a factory spin on filter... ie. it has a
soft plug in the oil pump drive hole below the filter vs a threaded plug.
