Ford 340 loader operation

Anybody know off the top of their head if a ford 340 loader has float? There is a sticker on the right loader frame assembly that would seem to indicate it does but all I can get it to do is up/down. Just bought this little guy so I just don't know what it's "supposed" to do. I'm used to driving a my D7 and float makes dragging really handy. Loader model is 19-863. Thanks

Most I have seen have a float position.
The control that regulates raise and
lower, can be pushed forward past the
normal stop into float. I have a 3550
that works that way

That's exactly how my dozer works. When I push this one forward, it just raises that tractor. Could there be wear in a linkage or valve that would not allow it to float?

One other thing worth noting: If I push it all of the way forward, I don't feel any kind of detent that would indicate that I'm going past the "down" position to "float" position like the dozer.

Look at the opposite end of the valves from the lever. You should see a cap covering the end of each valve spool. Are the caps the same length or is the one for the loader arm lift longer? Usually if they are the same length, no float. If the lift one is longer (and sometimes a bit different) it likely has float. That said; if parts inside are missing, rusted, otherwise stuck, or loose, the float detent may not work. Looking at the parts book, it shows a float arrangement for the valve, if it is original.

I have a 1982 545 TLB , it has the float, the first time I used it the thing was really hard to pop into float, like it had not been used very much or junk in the valve body, I looked at my spool valve just now it is different that yours but similar it has the longer spool om the bucket lift side

It looks like you should have float given the long cap on that spool. That is provided all the parts are inside and assembled correctly. It looks like the dust cap is missing from the end. The problem may be as simple as the screw that holds the detent assembly backed out of the valve spool. Parts page attached.

Thanks for the link. Looks like 18,19, and 20 control float?(at least that the description of parts) Anyone know how this assembly directs fluid? Service procedure? I've got a tractor now that lacks float. I don't want to get it apart and then have a tractor that lack lift too. Thanks

The spool in the valve body directs the fluid for lift, hold, lower, and float. The float position control is just a mechanical detent, set up on the end of the spool, to hold the spool in the float position so you don't have to. The spool centering spring and float detent are all that should be under that cap/housing, no oil.

You may find a generic service procedure, maybe even the correct one, for a float detent on line. if you have the loader service manual it should have it in the valve section.

I have a 340 with loader but the control is working so hard it is getting to the point that I can’t hardly use my loader. Is there a kit aviator does anyone have any ideas. Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

You will be best served by starting a thread of your own. This thread is 5-6 years old. Things have a way of getting mixed up between posts in the original thread and your added post. Describe your problem and post a couple pictures of your valve. As far as parts, I doubt there is a kit, and you may be lucky to find individual parts.

Do you have a manual to guide you through disassembling and cleaning your valve?

No manual. I will try to start a new thread. I realized I was adding to an old thread. Thanks
