Ford 3400 shift pattern

I recently bought a Ford 3400. Not knowing anything
about it, I had the clutch replaced recently and when I
drove it afterwards, I now have six forward gears and six
reverse gears. This doesnt seem right to me. Can anyone
tell me what might be going on here? Thanks!

Unless you had a lot more done than just a clutch replacement, it had a six-speed transmission with a forward and reverse shuttle before the clutch replacement and it still has the same now.

It sounds like a 6x4 manual reversing transmission with the internal interlock bypassed. It should have 6 forward and only 4 reverse gears. It should have a manual interlock inside that locks out the third speed when in reverse.

You might have the mechanical shuttle set up with 6 fwds and 6 bkwds. We dont know which of the 6 transmissions you may have.

I don't think that transmission was available back when the 3400 was sold, but it may have had the transmission replaced at some point. You never know with these old tractors where most parts were intrchangeable for so many generations.

Sean,

You are likely right on the interlock not functioning. A review of the transmission details page, on TractorData, shows what they called the 6-speed mechanical shuttle transmission in the overview, shows having 6 speeds forward and only 4 in reverse. The question is: did it have 6 and 6 before the clutch was replaced or did it have 6 and 4 before the clutch was replaced.

briankertz01,

Did you drive it and try all the gears before the clutch was replaced so you know it is different now? Or you don't know as you didn't drive it and try all the gears before the clutch was replaced.

Thanks for the reply. I bought the tractor with it not
running or moving. I first got it running, then had the local
shop fix the clutch. I have a couple of smaller ford
tractors, so this is my first experience with a 3000 series.
