Ford 3600 Temp

Had to replace alternator on my 3600 last weekend. Cranked up to check to make sure alternator was working and after running about 15 minutes noticed temp gauge moving into red so shut it down. Checked radiator and liquid was warm not hot. Cranked up next morning and seemed to run fine never moving to red. Sticking themostat? Don't see any seepage around water pump.

Could be thermostat. Could also be a gauge problem. If you have an IR heat gun take some readings along the right side of the block deck just below the head. Those are generally fairly true readings relative to what the gauge and thermostat should be reading...
Also... you can grab the upper rad hose. If the thermostat is opening at all the hose will be warm when the rest of the engine is warm.

Keep in mind that a bare wire on the temp gauge sender circuit will cause the gauge to sweep to hot... so it could just be a bare wire that might have gotten moved when you were changing the alt...

Don't have IR heat gun. Did take a look at this weekend again. Once cranked, takes awhile as it should for the needle to move. Drove it around a little while and the needle went about a 1/4 inch into the red. Checked the coolant in the radiator and it was warm not hot. After it idled down, the needle went back to between white and red. Let it keep running, the needle stayed normal and coolant eventually got hot. But when I speed the engine up, the needle starts to move over to the red. Thx.

That sounds like a ground issue on the sender wire or perhaps a bad sender or gauge. The reason being... when you speed the engine up the charge voltage comes up... and that drives the gauge to hot. I'd still want to check the block deck temperature with a heat gun if I could... those things are like 20 bucks at Princess Auto or Surplus center type stores. NAPA has them but it's more like 80 bucks there for the same basic thing.
Beyond that I'm inclined to think it's not hot. If it was it'd probably be boiling over constantly and you'd smell it cooking stinking hot if the gauge was going over that far for real.
