Ford 3910 Insturment Cluster

Does someone have a color coded wiring diagram that they could share for the 3910 Instrument Cluster? Wiring was chewed up by a rodent and I have been unable to get all wires reconnected properly.

Thanks. JO

Must be one in the multi volume shop manual set, would have to look it up, no time at the moment, headed in to work. Someone here should have it, if not I'll look later today.

Same kind of thing happened to my 4630, just they only damaged 3 wires if I recall. It apparently sat a year or more before I bought it. Last time I had the cluster out, I must have reversed 2 of the indication bulbs in the cluster sockets, oil light is now cluster lighting, as soon as you bump the throttle up, it goes out when first starting. These bulb holders do not like to stay in their sockets in the cluster, I had to get creative with a little bit of electrical tape to get them to stay while re-installing the cluster. Usually you can tell just by the form the wires have taken if carefully removed, they'll want to go back in the same spot.

Sure do appreciate if you have the diagram. Helping out a neighbor pull the dash, has an oil leak in the steering column. The lens is so yellow you cannot see the gauges , so he did not realize their was a problem, pulled the cluster to reveal a huge mouse nest on top of the fuel tank . Won't be a big problem to fix if we can figure out where to connect things back up..
Thanks, Jo

Jobird,

If you do a google search for Ford 3910 wiring diagram and go to images there are a number of images. Just be sure it is for a 3910. Often a lot of images show up that are not specifically what you ask for.

Most are not color coded, but at least you can trace where the leads go. I was surprised that the information for a 3910 still showed a generator instead of an alternator.

Does this 3910 have an alternator or generator and if it is an alternator was it factory equipped?

I just looked it up and Tractor data lists that a 3910 came with an alternator. One Google diagram shows an external regulator.

It might help if you find out which year this 3910 was made since there were constant upgrades during production and possible changes in the wiring. I don't know if or when they switched to an internal regulator.

Will take a look, ironically, our offices and shop were shut down today due to power company having to shut the power off for emergency repairs, so we all left and went home.

Since we cannot edit I have to write another post when I find something else. I had to put a new instrument cluster on my 4000 which had a generator. I now have an alternator and will have to change the wiring when I install it.

Another note: The original cluster may have been one with thermal bimetal gauges. (I don't know when they switched to the newer type). There is a mechanical chopper on the back of the cluster. Ford calls it a voltage stabilizer. Newer gauges especially replacement instrument clusters use D'arsonval gauges and do not use the stabilizer, but may have an empty can the size of a matchbox in place of the stabilizer. It is just a jumper inside the can.
There is also a deficit of fuses on these tractors. It is a good idea to install several inline blade fuses on these tractors. At least one should come from the alternator output.

Dash wiring doesn't have to be changed when converting to an alternator, after removing the voltage regulator the battery wire from the starter, alternator power wire and wire powering the ignition switch are spliced together, also the alternator field wire and the warning light wires are connected together.
Once this and the necessary wiring changes are made at the alternator everything is done.

Later model dashes don't use the voltage stabilizer but they do use a different temp and fuel sender than models with the stabilizer.

I don't have the wiring diagram for a 3910 but the wiring is basically the same as older models with the addition of the air filter restriction warning light.

I looked in my set of manuals for Tractors Series 10 Series 30 Part 3 electrical systems Chapter 1 to Chapter 8 Vol. 2A

It's hard to follow how they have this laid out. There is a diagram of the internal (underside) of what looks like the common instrument cluster. This does not illustrate anything by color and it does not label all the bulb sockets with instrument cluster wiring. There are 2 diagrams that tell you what things are, (one I mentioned and another) but do not reference any wire color. Also confusing is that all these manuals reference '10 series tractors, but when you go to the diagram for a "B" prefix tractor 2610, 3610, 3910 & up, the associated "Wiring Diagram" "A" or "B" Prefix, it references tractors with '00 suffixes, 2600 & up, not '10 series tractors.

So, I am not sure if the "Wire Colour Index" or "Key To Wiring Codes" is correct. Regardless, I suspect the related wiring diagram on the next page for '10 series tractors is still what you need, but it's 2 pages with what should be a match-line diagram (put the 2 diagrams adjacent to each other). Hard to figure how to post that and have it legible for other to see, and get all the lines to line up well enough so as not to distort the diagram.

I went through this exercise a year ago to see if I could match up a diagram to my 4630 that mice had chewed the wire to the fuel shut off solenoid, needed to determine what was what and it ended up being correct, the circuit has a diode in it and the the diode had failed. The manual is hard to follow on electrical in some regards, someone may know better. Still the best manuals for these tractors though.

Only thing I can think of is that I have seen these on the web, see if one can be matched up to the book and post that. Stay tuned.

The photos look the same but the color codes and item numbers should be what is needed to figure out the wiring in the photos

32 is the charge warning light which has two wires N/Y and G
N/Y is a brown wire with a yellow strip
G is a green wire

34 is the oil sender light which has W/N and G wires
W/N is a white wire with a brown strip
G is a green wire

36 are the panel lights and are not shown, this will be the only two lights with only one wire going to them

39 is the air filter warning light with wires B/LG and G
B/LG is a black wire with light green strip
G is a green wire

It appears the G=green wire is the ignition power wire to all of the warning lights

Wire from temp sender to gauge is G/U
This is a green wire with a blue strip

Wire from the fuel sender is G/B
This is a green wire with a black stripe

Without a photo of the cluster I'm unable to determine the colors of the cluster power wire, ground wire, or cluster light wires

Gentlemen thank you all for the in formation, it is much appreciated.
With it and whats left of the wiring we should be able to repair the wires.
