Ford 4000 Ind. PS Filter Question

I"ve got an early 60"s Ford 4000 Industrial with the 4 cyl. diesel. My power steering has worked well since I bought the tractor so I have never paid attention to it until I blew a hose while bush hogging today. I took the hose off and decided to take the top of the reservoir cap off to see how much fluid I lost. It was almost empty and I found a filter and spring in the bottom of the reservoir (not connected or mounted to anything). It"s the original style reservoir that sits directly on top of the pump and the cap is held on with a screw type clamp that goes around the lid. Does anybody have a diagram or description on how these are correctly installed? Also, what fluid is the correct fluid to run and how much?

There should be a wire with spring and washer that holds filter in place. Universal HYD oil will work fine.

Where does the wire/spring attach on each side?

The spring/wire assembly holds the filter onto the pump intake port near the bottom of the reservoir. Once you remove the rest of the old oil you will see how the hook in the end of the wire can be secured onto the lip at the bottom of the reservoir inside of the intake port.

If the filter was not attached, I strongly suggest that you thoroughly flush out all of the oid oil from the reservoir, cylinders, control valve and hoses before installing a new filter and CNH 134D oil.

Thanks for the replys. I found an exploded view at the local Ford tractor dealer and it looks like the previous owner has rigged a standard spring to serve as the filter hold down spring and it failed. The stock piece (Part #CONN3C603B) is $45 so I think I might try to rig something else up to hold the filter in place. I"ve got to go to TSC tonight for some other stuff so I"ll pick up some 134 oil.
