Ford 4000 serial # ?

Well I got to looking around online the other night I'm trying to figure out what year this 4000 ford I have really is ? The guy I bought from told me it was a 1964 year. But I got to looking at the cast numbers on the left side and they read #- 44365 -
So i looked online and seem like it's and older 960 or 961 ? I am not for sure.anyone have any idea. I read where ford used some the old 961 models and just replaced hoods with a 64 model and just painted the older ones blue?

I can't find that number to make sense for any ford model. Where are you finding that number on the tractor?

Your Model number should be stamped into the flat surface just to the rear of the starter on the flat part. As well as a serial number, this will give you the model and year for the transmission as originally produced, however it may have parts mismatched over the years.

As far as paint color, I've seen N's painted green/yellow, purple/gold... blue/silver... same for hundreds and thousands, just depends on what the owner liked at the time or in most cases what paint was on hand when they decided to paint the tractor...

If your tractor is a 4000, its model will start with a 4 for the 172 engine.

A picture or two would go a long ways in helping identify the tractor, one showing the hood, one from the side and one from the rear to help identify the rear end and other features that were year/model specific.

Model number shouldn't have any symbols to the left and right, if that is what you are seeing that would be a serial number instead, which would make it a 1964, the model number should be right above that.

Hello again. Thanks for the reply ! I am trying to
send some photos now ! The numbers right on the
flat spot behind the starter have a Diamond shape
on both side at the start or the number and at the
other end ? <> 44365 <> like this ?

Here is one photo .

Serial numbers are all within the diamonds like you said and 44365 would put it in a 1964. Above the serial number should be another set of numbers probably 41102 from the looks of the tractor. If it has the original radiator you can also look on top of the right side of it with the hood open and it should be a set of numbers. Example the numbers 2 64 would have been made in February 1964.

Are the numbers stamped on the radiator or on the support? Will this be true if it is a 2000 rather than a 4000. I'm asking because my 2000 4cyl has had the sos transmission replaced with a 4 speed, soo the numbers on the tranny are of no help.
Thanks,
Tex

They are raised letters just to the right of the radiator cap. For whatever reason they didn't stamp the radiators on the smaller tractors (600,700,601,701, 2000) only on the tractors with the 172 ci engine.

Well thanks for the great info ! I just got my sales brochure for the 2000 and 4000 series tractor on Saturday. Has a lot of good info but nothing much on production dates etc. but do appreciate everyone's
feedback on the post! It has been much help.

Your tractor has the proper sheet metal and grill for the 4000 series, so my bet is that it is a 4000, but the serial number by itself will not tell you what model or series the tractor is, as They started the serial numbers over each time they changed series. 44365 could be a 1955 hundred series, a 1958 "01" series, or a 1964 thousand series.

Yeah I was kinda thinking of another model such as
A 900 or up ? Wasn't for sure ..... I had read where
ford had few models with 4000 hoods and grill etc.
But we're actually 901 or 961 models with changed
Hoods cause I think there just about the same from
the 900 to the 4000 mine has the live power I think
on pto im pretty sure. I think that only started with
the 961 and up to the 4000 models. This one was a
one owner gas was setting in the barn in bean
station when I went and picked it up. Started right
up 1st try has new carb and other parts such as
breaks clutch and more. The 3 point it alittle slow
coming up and down I think fluid has water in it ?
Not for sure haven't got that fare yet. And oil pan
needs new gasket put on it as it leaks from the bolt
holes in the front and back. But for $ 3000 don't
guess was that bad of a deal ?

You don't need to be that worried over which exact year it was made and whether it si a 961 or 4000 row crop. They are basically the same tractor and there were only minor differences between them.

Yeah I'm not to worried... On that end of it. I seen
the Dime shaped on both ends of that serial number
so I guess from what I've read would make it a 4000
year make. Anyways it's one strong machine I've
got it some worked it and seems to be no give in it
with pulling strong. I've had a few other old tractors
by far like this tractor a lot.

the live pto was available on the 5 spd tractors starting with the 55 year models. *6* machines had 2 stage clutch.

Here's a pic of my 1963 4000 .. Might be your tractros brother. ;)

Great, strong machines.

Man your looks great !!! That awsome 4000 ! Mine runs wonderful I just put the original factor muffler back on it going to change all the fluids soon... The 3 point is very slow.. The 3 point lift works but only comes up half way ? Not sure might be ol fluid in there mixed with water maybe ? But as far as sound you can't beat this tractor I think it's beautiful machine ! 😊

Sound guy .

Question ? What brand of oil due you run in your 4000
And what filter do you use on it ?
As fare as tranny oils and 3 point lift housing do you use the sands oil in all rear ended ?
