Ford 4000 SOS problem

I have a 1963 Ford 4000 with the SOS transmision which worked fine in all ranges. Yesterday while hooking up to a trailer the shift handle suddenly got very loose while shifting from R1 to 2 and all of the selector positions until about 6th on the indicator have no resistance. It is in a forward gear but I am not sure which one. I am looking at the trouble shooting chart in the I&T manual and it doesn't really match my conditions. I haven't put any pressure gauges or adjusted anything but, before I start does anyone have suggestions.

My plan was to 1st disassemble the shift selector wheel and cable to see something slipped or broke if nothing is obvious move it to the shop and begin a more methodological diagnosis of the problem.

It seems that a lot of the parts are not stocked at the local NH store and they seem to have changed to more construction equipment and the parts guys don't know/care much about 50 year tractors. So I may be in for an internet search to find parts, I use Messicks for my NH tractors and hay equipment but haven't tried them for older stuff.

TIA

It sounds like the selector cable has broken.

Though you can disassemble and inspect the selector, do not attempt to remove the transmission top cover or the selector conduit until you have read and understood the appropriate procedures in a proper Ford service manual.

Thanks for the replies -- I assume that when you say proper maual it is the Ford service manual and not the I&T manual. I will go online and order one.

I have the IT manuals on several Fords. Most of (the contents of) the manuals are devoted to that transmission. I find they are very informative.

I also have a couple of Ford manuals for pre and post '65 years and I don't think IT does that bad of a job. I'm saying this just in case you have a problem getting an OEM manual.

Not so proud past owner of a 4000 SOS........I wanted gear shift levers on my tractor.....WAAAAAAAAAAAAA! grin. Well I did. The SOS was ok. Tweaked the bands with what was left of the adjustment screws....bands just about gone, replaced the PTO cable, that was about it for maint on mine. 10 speeds was nice; creep when fluid was cold was a pain.

My 2c,

Oh, and replaced the drive disc (disc between engine and tranny input shaft....clutch disc in manual shift trannys).
