can someone tell me about the ford 4000's? i have a line on one that i might be able to get for a good price. it needs some work on the steering box and i now it's gas powered. did they come with live pto? i have a ford 8n right now, but it is just not enough tractor for what i need.

Depends entirely on WHAT 4000 is is since Ford decided to grace 2 completly different tractors with that moniker between 1962 and 1975, and the later 3 cylinders from '65-'75 have some variations.
Basically, a post 65 tractor will have a 3 cylinder engine and independant PTO with the exception of the 4110 (4000 LCG). All 3 cylinders have live hydraulics.
When it comes to the early 4 cylinders, again all should have live hydraulics (if they have hydraulics). The PTO's can range from transmission driven on the 4 and some 5 speeds to a live PTO on SOME 5 speeds, and then independant PTO on the S-O-S models.... so it depends on what you're looking at.
My pick o the lot would be a mid 70's 4000 with an 8 SPEED TRANSMISSION.
I'd leave the jerk a matic alone for a working tractor, but that's just me....

thanks,
that info helps alot. i also found out the tractor has been rolled. that's why the steering box needs work. don't not what other damage was done. hope to see it on sunday.
