I have a 1964 Ford 4000 Diesel (Tricycle front tires). Will this tractor handle a small square baler? Any advice from anyone out there who uses this tractor with a square baler? Thanks JLH

These tractors love to run a small baler.
It will run better after too!
3 cylinder 3000 & 4000 diesels like to work and they handle these small balers without using a lot of fuel like some tractors.

JLH:

Your 4 cylinder 64 4000 will have plenty of power to run a small square baler.

How well it will run one will depend upon the transmission.

If you have the 4 speed transmission (unlikely) your ground speed will be fairly high and you will not have live PTO. This set up is marginal for hay baling.

If you have the five speed transmission, you will have adequate ground speed control and probably but not necessarily live PTO. The double clutch (live PTO), five speed version is ideal for a small square baler as is the Select-O-Speed version with independent PTO.

Actually, I think ALL 4-cylinder 2000's and 4000's with 5-speeds have live pto.
While it's not as handy, a tractor with non-live pto CAN run a baler. Grandpa used to bale close to 10,000 bales a year with a Farmall Super H and a Super 68 New Holland (later a NH 276). A 4000 is more tractor than the Super H... it will do it.

Thanks for the info it is a four speed trany. One question though. What is a live PTO? To engage the PTO on my tractor it has to be in neutral and stoped.

Non-live and live PTO both have to have the tractor stopped with the clutch down to engage the pto.(does not have to be in neutral though) Independant pto does not. A live pto has a 2nd clutch disk to allow the pto to be powered while stopping the tractor. Pushing the clutch pedal 2/3 of the way stops power to the wheels; pushing it all the way down stops power to the wheels and pto.

yes, they are fuel misers. The 2000 diesel will make you begin to wonder if it isnt running on air it uses so little even when working hard.
