my father has a ford 4000 diesel tractor that is very hard to start when it gets cold. he says there is not a glow plug on it that he knew of and someone had told him it may have been built for a warmer climate area and didn't need a glow plug. could someone tell me where to look for it on the tractor and if there is not one on there how i could install one.

If it is a three cylinder, the glow plugs operate by turning the key to the left and hold for about 30 seconds. Turning the key further to the left should keep the glow plug warming and crank the engine.

Brian, you should think about putting a block heater in it before you burn out the starter. Cheap money and works slick. Do a search here on it, lots of good info. :D

If it's a '63 or '64 4000 with a 4 cyl engine it has 2 glow plugs installed in the intake manifold and someone may have removed them.
If it's a '65 or later 4000 with a 3 cyl engine it may have a Thermostart unit installed in the intake manifold where the air hose from the filter connects. The thermostart unit will have a fuel line connected to it and an electrical wire. According to my Owner's Manual the thermostart was standard equipment on SOS tractors and optional on standard transmissions.
