Ford 4000

I finally got that 4000 moved yesterday. After about 30 mins of tinkering we actually got it to start and drove it back and forth a few times.
(It has set up for 20+ years, so once I tried to turn the wheel, the high pressure hose going to the steering cylinder busted.)

I don"t have much experience with tractors and just had a few questions. First, the PTO was spinning with the clutch disengaged. Does this mean the PTO is independent? If so, how does this differ from a transmission PTO? Anything I need to know about operating it or just use it the same as a transmission driven PTO?

Second, there is a pedal on the right side behind my foot. I pressed it a few times and nothing noticeable happened, anyone know what this is for?

The tractor is a 3 cyl. diesel. Not sure of year as the transmission was replaced and now there is no serial number.

I believe most 3-cyl. 4000's have independant PTO (those with 8-speeds and SOS's, anyway) They have their own, hydralically operated clutch. Can be engaged or disengaged without using the foot clutch. SOS models don't have a PTO brake, if an 8-speed, it may need a new PTO brake.
The pedal by your right heel is the differential lock. Don't use it when trying to turn, or you won't be ABLE to turn. Just sitting there, or going straight (and not spinning), you wouldn't notice anything when you step on it.
