I am going to look at a Ford 4000 tomorrow morning.
The owner isn't sure what year it is. Where is the
serial number located on the tractor? I am not very
familiar with the 4000 series, are there any normal
problems with them? The owner says it has a 3
cylinder gas engine. Thanks in advance for any info
you might have or any pointers you can give me.

Have a look at this web page on identifying the 1965 to 1975 3 cylinder Ford tractors before you go to look at the tractor. Print it out and take it with you. It shows where to look for the model number, serial number, and production code. One place, as DollarBill said, is on the flat spot that faces up on the right side of the transmission bell housing, just toward the rear of the tractor from the starter. There was also a silver colored foil sticker on the underside of the right half of the hood with the same information, plus a few more numbers, and if you're lucky the sticker might actually still be there and not be painted over.

The model number will start with a 4 or a D if it is a 4000 series, and the rest of the number will tell you what type of chassis, engine, transmission and PTO it's got.

The serial number should start with an A, B or C, depending on which factory it was assembled at, followed by a 6 digit number.

The production code should start with a one digit number followed by a letter, 1 or 2 more digits and a final letter., and it will tell you exactly when the tractor was assembled. The final letter of the production code can be missing on some, especially models that have a serial number starting with a B.

a 4000 3 cyl should be a GREAT machine.

do make sure what you ae looking at though.

there are SU models that are basically a 3000 front end ( radius rods ) and draglink style steering.. just like all the ag chassie models from 39 and up.. and then the full ag model 4000 with the much heavier and better front axle design.

both should have the rear wet brakes and planetaries..e tc.

Take some cleaner so you can read the numbers better.. Paper and pencil to rub over the plate also.
