I have a ford 4000 that I am fixing for a friend. It had a hydraulic leak on the smaller of the tubes that run from the pump to the right rear side of the tractor. It was leaking at the compression fitting and I have a new one on order from my NH dealer. What I'm asking is are the transmission and the hydraulic sumps common and where do i find the plug to pull to check the hydraulic level when I fill it with oil?

I have a 2000 4 cyl and would assume the 4000 to be similar. Tranny, hyd and rear axle are all separate reservoirs. The hyd check is a dip stick on the left side ....very visible.

I have a 3 cyl 3000 that has a combined hyd and rear axle with the full plug a 1/8" pipe plug even with the rear axle and a few inches ahead of it on the right side. Would estimate that later model 4000's would be configured the same way.

wtcoyote, is your 4000 a pre-1965 4 cylinder or a 1965 & newer 3 cylinder model? The transmission is a separate sump on both, but the 4 cylinders have a hydraulic sump that is separate from the rear axle as well, while the 3 cylinders have a common sump for the hydraulics and rear axle.

As to the level checking, if it's a 4 cylinder, there should be a dipstick at the fill hole for the hydraulic sump. If it's a 3 cylinder there is a square headed pipe plug on the right side of the rear axle center housing that's your level check hole, just fill it until the oil just starts to come out of that hole.

Thanks to all for the input. This is the later
model with a three cylinder. If I understand you
correctly the hydraulics and the rear axle are a
common sump. I fill from the top fill cap on the
rear axle, pull the square headed plug on the right
rear even with the center of the axles and fill
until oil level reaches the plug.
Thanks again for the input,
Terry

This is a fairly easy fix. I had to remove the right foot rests four bolts, also the return springs on the brakes had to be removed from the foot rests. After you get that far you just have to remove the fitting from the side of the tractor. You will have to get the whole assembly. You'll get a new nut and compression fitting. You'll have to use a side cutter to remove the old spring loaded washer, my own term as I don't the correct name, to get the complete assembly off.
I hope this helps,
Terry
