I own a Ford 4000 tractor and oil is coming out of the dipstick after a 30 mile road run.

Is this a normal problem and if not how do I go about fixing it?

It starts ok and runs ok.

Any replies would be appreciated.

Thanks
Neil

How much oil? If not a lot check you crank case breather tube to see if it's plugged. If that's not it you may have a lot of blow by from worn rings.

Welcome to the board.
Always mention whether youhave a 3 cylinder 4000 or a 4 cyl model. And in this case is it a gas or diesel?
Did you check the oil level? What is it reading?
On a 4 cyl model it could the breather on the side of the engine might be plugged up so it's blowing out the dipstick. 3 cyl doesn't have that problem.
Also the seals in the injector pump on both model diesels could be bad and leaking into the pan causing it to get over full.
But we need more info to help much. Also a little history on the tractor would help - how long you've owned it, recent major work, etc.

Not to insult you or anything but are you sure it was not overfilled with oil? I have seen people rebuild engines when the only problem was too much oil.

Is it gas or diesel . If diesel it is most likley the injection pump
leaking fuel into the oil. Smell the oil. It should not smell like
fuel.

Hi all
I am obviously new to the site and appreciate your speedy replies.

My 4000 is a 3 cylinder diesel and I put 15/40 oil in it, someone suggested I should use SEA 30.

I have had the tractor for about one year and only use it for shows at the moment.

I will check the crack shaft breather and smell the oil to see if it smells of fuel - thanks for these suggestions.
I will confirm that it was not overfilled with oil.

Regards

Neil

Use only 15w-40 hd oil for your 3 cyl.

check the breather pipe that comes off the top of the valve cover and runs down the front of the engine to make sure its not stopped up.

diesel will have a little blow by so if you run it down the highway and you see a drip on the dipstick, its pretty much normal. Just make sure the valve cover vent tube is open. If the oil is over full, or milky white, or smells like diesel, you may have other problems. All diesels will have some blowby or pressure, but the vents will normally take care of them.

Hi all

Just to let you all know what I have done today.

1. Hard job but I took off the breather pipe, it was blocked up a bit, washed it out, cleared it with some strong wire and a parts washer.

2. After putting it all back together again I started her up and it is not breathing back so much on the dip stick.

3. I have been advised to use a 15 30 oil because 15 40 is too good and it polishes up the balls.

4. Next job is to change the oil and put in a new filter.

Thanks for all your advice, I will keep you informed.

I would suggest that you find out how much oil is supposed to be in the crankcase by looking it up in the manual, and the next oil change, only put in that amount. Sometimes dipsticks are calibrated wrong and if so, you might have more oil in there than it was designed for. An engine with too much oil might very well have problems with leaks, especially if you run them at high RPM"s for a long time.

By the way, I am interested in this 30 mile run, as I have never driven a tractor anywhere nearly that far on the road. Maybe that much going back and forth doing field work, but never on a road.

Hello all

The 30 mile run consisted of 8 fairly steep hills and was to a tractor show with a plough on the back.

To keep you boys updated I have completed the following jobs:-

The radiator has been recorred

The water pump was leaking and it was the gasget

Took off crank shaft pully to get to the timing cover to change the crank shaft oil seal

Obviously to do this I had to take away the front axel.

After putting this all back together I went out for a short run and all seems ok.

Thank you for the advice regarding the oil, I got some 15.30 and put that in too.

Regards

Neil
