There were two models called the 4100.

The first one was the regular ag chassis version of the 1965-1975 4000 series (model number stamped into the transmission started with either 410 or D10 depending on the year). Most folks just called them the 4000 as opposed to the 4200 which was the row crop chassis model in that series.

The second one was made from 1975-1981, and it was part of the later 4600 series, not the 4000 series. It was basically a 4600SU with a slightly smaller 192 ci engine. It used the lighter radius rod front axle and steering of the 3xxx series and the heavier duty rear axle of the 4xxx series just like the 4000SU and 4600SU, just with a slightly smaller engine. The model number stamped into the flat spot for a 4100 would start with KA1 or KA2 depending on the exact year it was made.

And yes, tractordata is pretty much spot on with its information for the 4100 made from 75-81.

Thanks for the reply. So the 4100 is less horsepower than a 4600 SU? I was under the impression that all 3 cylinder 4000/4600/4610 diesel tractors were equipped with the 201 engine. Learn something new every day.

I thought the 4100 had the 183, not the 192.
4.2" bore, 4.4" stroke.

The 1965 to early 1968 ("World-wide" series...louvered hoods) 4000's used a 192 c.i. engine in the gas models. 4.4" bore, 4.2" stroke.

Sean, I would add to your excellent response, for the benefit of the OP: The 1965 version of the 4100 and 4200 had decals on the hood that said 4000. The 1975 version of the 4100 had decals that labeled it as a 4100.

Here's a shot of part of a page from late 1970's Ford literature for the 4100, 4600SU, and 4600. 4100 is 183 c.i. and 45 PTO h.p.

Technically, only the models where the model designator started with a 4 or a D were part of the true 4000/4600 series. The 4100 model designator started with a K. The first K series tractors were the 3550 which replaced the 3500 sometime around 1972, and the 3055 "French Super", which also started production around the same time. The 4100 replaced the 3055, and the 420 industrial model replaced the 3550. Then the replacements for the 445 were the 445A and then the 445C. The replacements for the 4100 were the 4110 and then the 4130. They all had K as the first letter in the model designator and all had the 183 ci engine. When the 455 replaced the 445C in 1987, it kept the K model designator, but it had a 201 ci engine, which didn't make any sense in my mind.
