Ford 4130 industrial

Went to look at a ford 4130 tractor / back hoe. It is a 6 v system but the battery was not hooked up. Is there any way to tell if this would be a positive ground tractor or negative ? Or just hook up the battery with negative ground and see what happens?? Thanks..

If it's a factory 6V system, it's positive ground. All Ford gas tractors were 6V pos. ground until 1965. Ford diesels have always been 12V neg. ground. That said... it may have been changed to neg. ground at some point. But I'd try pos. ground to start with.

Thanks Ill give it a shot. I know you can jump start the 6v starter from a 12v truck, without problems, but how would the positive ground issue affect the starting I don't want to burn out something. If I cant get the battery to work I want to at least see if I can get it started and moved closer to the garage

Yes it was positive ground. Got it running, but had to jump across the Solenoid, so either got probs with the key switch or the Solenoid. But at least I can get it close to the garage now. Thanks
