I have a 4400 ford 3 cylinder diesel that the hydraulics stopped working. I thought that it needed fluid so I added some but it still didn"t work. In the past I have had the shaft for the front mounted pump move and I have had to reach down and move it forward. I did that and now I am getting some hydraulics. Just a jerking of the cylinders, but also a "howling" from the back of the tractor. I can"t figure out what is happening. Any idea"s would be appreciated.

I just was playing around with the 4400 and I figured out( I think) that either the shaft that drives the hydraulic pump or the splines internal to the pump are bad. When I push and secure the shaft forward it worked long enough to get the bucket and backhoe up. If I have it at low RPM it works some. When I rev it a little it works less. Does anybody know where to buy a new pump if I need one? I will pull it and look at it in the next day or so. Thanks Brian

Your pump is probably OK. Stripped splines are fairly common. My neighbor had this problem, and it would make a growling noise when he put a load on it, and the loader wouldn"t work. I could see that the shaft was rotating, but the pump was not.
