I have a used Ford Industrial Tractor, I need help in determining what model. Was told it was a 445, but no letter designation. I cannot find a serial number as the tab under the hood is gone.
Here are the numbers I have
Left side of transmission below the seat - 29-9-86
E3NN 4024 AD
NW LH1 87
Right side of trans E2 NA 7006-CA
Another spot on the trans AA 7061 and then maybe another 1
Serial number on axle 0000591
Engine 6010 DAA 61G02 6L20A

The 445 was made from 1978-1985. The E3NN4024AD and E2NA7006CA numbers are casting codes which tells the engineers about the specific design of the casting. The first 2 numbers indicate the decade and year within the decade that the casting design was created. Any particular design could have been used for days, months, or years after that particular design was first introduced. E2 is 1982 and E3 is 1983, so the tractor was likely made in the time period that the 445 was made, but no way to know for sure without the other numbers stamped into the flat spot near the starter. Another place to look for the numbers is on a foil sticker on the under side of the right side hood panel, up above the battery. If that sticker is still there and legible, post the numbers back here.

The next two letters meant the engine and vehicle in the auto world, but I never saw what “NN” meant. Can you shed any light on this?

The third character designates which Ford division it was designed for, and N is the tractor division. The fourth character designates which division it was designed by, and N in that spot is also the tractor division. The E2NA number is interesting, as that means that it was designed for the tractor division, but it was designed by the truck division.

I thought N N 1st one for tractor division and 2nd was North America because there was a E used and it meant Europe. On the 7006 was basic trans number. There was multiple prefixes and suffixes used to denote model and years first used.

No, the first one is the division it was designed for and the second one for the division that did the designing.

So how do they separate a 7006 transmission housing between a 9700 and a 3400 if they are both built after ‘58?
First two characters are the decade and year within the decade. The next two are the division it was designed for and the division that did the designing. The next 4 or 5 are the part number, and then if there were multiple casting designs that would otherwise be identical, they added letters at the end to differentiate between them. Some designs were never even put into production due to additional design changes after one particular design was finalized and before they actually started making them, so you might never see one with a C at the end even though there were A, B and D suffixes for the same initial string of characters. They aren't documented anywhere outside of the Ford engineering department that I am aware of, other than people posting them online and saying I have a 201 ci gas engine from a 1973 4000 with the casting code D2NN6015xx.

Is this flat spot behind the starter, do I need to take the starter off?

OK, I have located the numbers on the plate by the starter
Here is what I see
KD4141
6m12B
c768779*
Also is the oil filler cap toward the front of the engine on the right side, with a different type of cap on it, sort of like a boat plug?
Anyone know the year and if it is an A,B,C or whatever

6M12B is a date code. 1986, December 12, day shift. It would be an '87 model, with that late a build date.
My 1985 sales literature lists the 445A. I don't have any literature covering the '87 model year.

KD4141:
KD4: Model 445A
1: Diesel engine
4: Independent 540 PTO
1: 4X4 Power Reversing transmission

6M12B, as previously stated, Dec 12 1986, Day shift

My reference shows SN C768779 to be an early 1987 number (C763228 shows as starting number Jan 1987).

Yeah I think you have the right place for the oil fill.
