Ford 4500 backhoe

I filled the hydraulic fluid resovoir and it is overflowing the crankcase oil dipstick. How can this be?? Is there a connection between the two systems? HELP????

Power steering pump is putting hydraulic/steering oil into the crankcase thru a defective shaft seal on the pump..

He said "hydraulic fluid reservoir" not PS pump, maybe the OP can clarify?

Power steering pump is the first thing that comes to mind.... Bad shaft seal.
If the tractor has a S-O-S transmission with an engine mounted pump... then I could see a bad pump causing 'hydraulic' oil to enter the engine.

Otherwise I'd say you have one of two problems internal to the engine. 1. Either there is a bad fuel pump seal, bad thermostart unit or bad injector allowing fuel into the oil, or... and hope it's not...
2. A pinholed block allowing coolant into the oil.

Thanks for the replies. This has a stand alone main hydraulic pump shaft driven of course. When I filled the hydraulic resovoir and started the motor the steering did turn automatically as if the steering pump was priming up.
Hopefully it is the seal on this pump huh?

There is no way for oil from the front pump to enter the engine.
You can look at a PS pump leak, main hydraulic piston pump leak which is mounted on the rear of the engine if it has an S-O-S or 6x4 transmission or some other internal engine leak...

I've seen early 4500's that have a small P/S pump located in the conventional spot..These pumps have no reservoir can on the pump..They are fed from the hydraulic system via steel lines..

thanks for the steering pump shaft tip. We took off the steering pump and the seal is kind of crisp so it will get replaced. However it is hard to believe that so much hydraulic fluid could pass by that shaft. So now we have taken off the auxillary? hydraulic piston pump (slipper pump??) that is mounted on the left side of the engine block and seems to feed to the back trans axle area? That is also a cross connection with the internal engine. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone??
