Ford 4500 cold starting

Hello, just purchased a 4500 Backhoe with the 3cyl engine. It's about 30deg F outside, and I forgot to plug it in. I tried to start it with the throttle lever at about 1/2 and it gave a few puffs but nothing more. Realizing my error I have now plugged it in. Once the block heater has done it's work, what is the best starting procedure, in other words, throttle position, do I give a little shot of fuel with the foot throttle ect. ? Thanks for the help!

The way we start the 4600 my friend has is we open the throttle about half way and start it. I just installed a block heater in it a couple weeks ago and sure does make it start easy. As for messing with the foot throttle pumping it will not help a thing it will not pump in more fuel

Is the Thermostart plug in the intake manifold operational? The system works by turning the ingition switch the other direction.

Thanks, once plugged in for an hour it started right up. I will have to look into the other starting option if it still works after all these years(I am just a few years older than the tractor, and not everything works on me!)

With a good fully charged 4DLT battery,2/0 cables, thermo start working she should light up down to 30-25deg. on her own, mine was nonoperational when i brought her home ran a new fuel line and power wire works like a charm now, mine you turn to the right there's a hard spot in the selector then beyond that is cranking spot.

1/2 throttle wile starting is fine,i leave mine at idle seems to fire good,i don't like revving a cold engine.
