I may be getting a ford 5000, but i'm told the engine is blown. I'm not sure how blown, but i'm thinking non repairable blown. Where can i find a new engine, and how much am i looking at, or is it just not worth messing with. Also how much is a ford 5000 with loader and blown engine worth. It is a diesel.

Hi Tim

I would start pricing the engine with a new holland dealer. Last I knew they could get them. Difficult thing is I am in Australia and the 5000 is a common old tractor here. If the thing does not run you wont know what is working and what isn't like power steering or other systems and you may be able to repair the engine if you knew what was wrong. The 5000s are great tractors and usually trouble free in the back end. If you got it cheap enough and are half handy with the spanners it could be an interesting project.

I think I'd try to find a similar engine.. IE.. 256 from a 5600.. etc.. or even an older 233.. from a machine with a bad trans.. like perhaps an sos machine. etc.. and swap in.. as the other poster said.. with no engine. hard to say what else don't work.

you can get new engines from that valyoubilt place.. but at like 4500$ or so..

i do't think I'd pay much over scrap price for the machine.. good 5000's can be had for 4000-6000$

In addition to what Soundguy said, annother source for a replacement engine is old Ford/Class 620 and 622 self-propelled combines. Biggest drawback is the vast majority of them are gas. Big advantage is they are cheap. I paid $300 for a complete 256 gasser off a 622, then later found a 5000 with a bad engine to put it in. Still a work in progress... hope to have it running within a month.

This is kinda nit-picking, but... 5600's (except for the '81 Blue Power Special) came with 233 c.i.'s. They were meant to split the difference between the 4600 and 6600... the 6600 was actually meant as the replacement for the 5000.

That's correct...either either will fit the bellhousing though.

I only mentioned it as if you look in the VB catalog I mentioned.. it's 'replacement' engine for much of the 5xxx and 6600 is a 256.. etc.

Just had a 256 rebuilt by a guy who used to be a dealer. Not happy with everything he did, but including a few extras like a seat, paid about $3600. He was very knowledgeable about the tractors and the engine. The clutch was good and we did not replace it. I took the engine out and put it back myself. Seems like the dealers were more like $6000 just for the engine?

Tim; when referring to an engine; the word """""blown""""" is a rather mystic word to be using...... I would first find out what is ""wrong"" with the engine..... I know of one Ford 5000 that the owner said was """"""blown"""""... Another fellow that I know bought the tractor for a song and a dance... He hauled the critter home and investigated the horrid ssmmookkiinngg pig and wondered if it was even getting any air..... He removed the air pipe between the intake manifold and the oil bath air cleaner and twisted the key...... Purred like a kitten, and the SSmmookkee soon cleared up.... What happened???? the prior owner had a large round bale on the loader that got away from him and bounced off the hood... In doing so, that big bale managed to drive the upright inlet tube of the air cleaner straight down to the bottom of the oil bath air cleaner; and cut off the air supply to the engine...... You may not be quite soooo lucky, but it may be well worth your while to have a little more investigating done.... Please post back..

A sick tractor is like a sick calf, not worth much until it gets well. As to the engine, depends on whats bad in it. Unless there is a giant hole in the block most all the guts are available. My last rebuild (this year) 2200.00 out the door on a 268 cid in from a 7610. That was a hole in the block, spun bearings, and a hole in a piston. Price included all the machine shop work for sleeves, crank turn, and all the parts plus assembly of the short block.
