ford 5000 simms injection pump

have ford 5000 diesel with a simms piston type injection
pump.# 4 piston is stuck in the up position . I took the side
cover off and I tried to pry it down its stuck ! Is it a major
problem to get to the top of the piston can I simply pull the
block on top of the pump and gain access ?

You can pull the tappets out after removing the head on the top of the pump. Be sure you don't mix the plungers and barrels.

Thanks Bern for the reply the top block is held on with allen head screws is there a gasket in there or is it machined to seal ? I have never pulled one these pumps apart.

Older ones used a gasket and the newer ones did not. Make sure you put back in what came out, or you'll screw up the timing.

Thanks Bern. I pulled the top and it took 5 min to get the plunger free sure beats buying a rebuilt pump THANKS . Works fine.

I have read many articles regarding worn gears and retarded timing on the ford engines. I found the timing marks. I understand I could move from 19* BTDC to 23* BTDC with no prblems. Right now it appears I am at 20* BTDC.

My question is: Exactly where should the timing marks on the engine lie up to? I see my engine and injection pump marks line up at what looks like 20* BTDC. Now how do I get to 23* BTDC if I should need go that far?
