Ford 5000 Specs

I had a few questions about the Ford 5000. I am doing a paper comparing late 1960-1975 tractors in the 70hp range. Any help will be appreciated. I am aware of external_link and know that it is very helpful but I still have a handful of questions.

1. did the 5000 have a differential lock?
2. what "styles" of the 5000 were offered? exp High crop, row crop, utility etc
3. is the engine in the frame or is it the frame?
4. the 3 point sensing was upper/lower?
5. did they have front-wheel assist offered on the 5000?

Thanks ahead of time. Have a good day.

question answered in order:

All the ones I have driven have had it.

row crop, utility not sure about high crop

frame

not sure what you are asking. They have draft control.

Don't believe so from the factory.

Late models had dual power.

Somebody more knowledgeable will correct me if I am wrong.

Vito

yes

5100 and 5200 all purpose and rowcrop.. maybe others like vineyard(narrow), lcg and hyway on special order.

engine is the frame

top link is used for draft sense if I understand the question.

no 4wd, but aftermarket folks like "Country Tractors" modified them and added the 4wd.

One of the most popular and longest lasting ever built by anyone's standards.

Early models had sucky power steering later corrected. otherwise pretty much rock solid. Great hp, Great performance in that size, Great longevity. Argue between jd 4010 series and ford 5000 series being best ever made.

thanks for all the answers. I will make sure to show you guys my finished comparison. The Ford 5000 certainly stacks up with the best of them as far as the 60-70 HP class.

Anybody know how many were produced?

Thanks again for all the help. Ive always really loved the look of the 5000 Flat decks (i believe they are also called 5200's?

My cousins worked one as their main brute along with their 1655 and 7000 Ford. They said the 7000 turned the tach (went over 10,000 hours)

It was their main tillage tractor along with hauling 3 loads of manure a day.

County mainly had 4wd tractors with the equal front and rear tire sizes.

Schlinder (not sure of spelling) made mfwd 3000 and 4000 fords.

Roadless made lots of 5000 and larger mfwd tractors. They were sold through certain ford dealers with the front axle installed and ready to go.

As for power steering, my 1965 has the original early style setup. I have no trouble turning the large 9.5x24 ag tires up front with a loader bucket full of material while sitting still. When moving it steers with 1 finger on the wheel.

I can relate to the early models and the power steering. I have one, and it has to be 'herded', and with a load in the loader bucket it is more like no power steering at all. Probably needs work, but it has a good 1/2 turn of slop in the wheel. Makes it interesting on the road in 8th gear.

I agree with your views on the early Ford 5000 PS systems. When that setup is adjusted and working properly, it was far and away the easiest turning PS system Ford ever developed. You'd think you were steering a 4020 JD!

You probably should be aware that there was a very significant power increase during the run. While they ended up at 69 or so HP, the earlier ones were much less probably around 55. It seems that any used one for sale is listed as 69 HP regardless of what it really is.

yes i noticed that they updated engines for the diesel and gas
models. The later Ford 5000 is they one I am taking specs from.
Thanks.

Just to add to what the others have said... in addition to the 5100 utility and 5200 row crop, there WAS a 'high crop'. It was a 5100 with 38" rears and a pair of 'knees' from a 5200 wide front axle.
The 5200 was available with a short or long wheelbase wide front, single front tire, or narrow front.

I have a 74 5000D WITH A Quickie loader, it has Dual power and I love the tractor. That is all I can tell you if that helps any.

yes, but everyone I have come across with early steering is plumb wore out and you cant get parts.

And since I'm not buying em new.. then the moral of the story, is to stay far far far far away from the early power steering. It cost me too too much to convert them back to good steering again. kind of like a 6000.. just look and walk on by..cause you cant give em away.

I need tractors that can work or be cleaned up and sold.. not yard ornaments.. I have plenty of massey and deere for yard ornaments. Any thing I sell I have an agreement to buy back if it doesnt perform. so pretenders and wanna-bes are out of the question.

Funny my 5000 with MFWD was purchased new for logging. Guy used it all summer to farm and all winter to log with from 1966 until sometime in the early 90's. Tractor has been used and abused in its past. I still use it all the time on the farm for plowing, discing, planting, haying, blowing snow, winter feeding, etc and the power steering shows no signs of giving up. Guess they aren't all bad, just have to know how to take care of your equipment.
