Ford 5000 tranny

My ford 5000 diesel jumps out of gear when under load or going up a grade. I know it is tranny caused, but what is the fix?

First & second. But will hold when I put it in low range.
If you had said 2nd and reverse, I would have said a cracked shift fork for sure. However, 1st and 2nd use two different shift forks, so I'm going to rule that out.

About the only other thing that would be a common denominator here in this case would be excessive end play of the various components along the main countershaft. Worn thrust washers could certainly be a potential factor.

Remove the shift cover and reach below with two hands and try and grab any gear on the bottom forward shaft and move it back and forth. Typical end play spec is around .010 - .020". Much more than that and I think you've found your problem.

Check also the condition of the detent springs with the shift cover off. If that checks out OK, then you likely have worn coupling teeth on the gears and/or couplers.
