I have gotten great advice from this forum while fixing my 1972 ford 5000 deisel tractor and i appreciated all of it even had some nice conversations with soundNguy as well.my problem now is I have a leaky wheel seal and need to fix it before i paint the tractor. how complicated is this process and any thing that might make the job easier.
thanks

It's not exactly hard, but not really easy either. You need some way to handle a 300+ # axle trumpett. I usualy use a pallet fork but an engine crane will work. Get eh linkages clear of the axle and the ROPS if it has them. Support the axle with whatever you're lifting with, undo the bolt ring and pull the axle straight out until the input shaft is clear. If this is the RIGHT hand side, the differential will be waiting to land on your feet, so BEWARE of that and take it out and have a clean place to set it...
Once the axle is out, stand it up on the hub and remove the brake parts, then the locks on the axle shaft retainer bolt, then remove the bolt. Drive the seal off the outer end of the axle housing and then lift the housing clear of the shaft. You then need a bearing seperator, and good size one at that with long rods and pull the bearing off the shaft. Install the new seal provided the shaft surface is fine, and install in reverse. Take care to get the correct torque on the axle retainer bolt. Don't over torque it. Bad things happen if you do...
I'd also inspect the brake plates for wear when you're in there. Good time to change them if they're needed. If the discs are warped or the linings badly worn, now is the TIME before they contaminate the hydraulic system. Again, don't ask...
Button it back together and you're done.
