Elgar is the difference between a Ford 601 and a Ford 541? Don’t they have same engine, transmission and sheet metal?

501 was the Ford Series designation and referred to all models within the series. Apparently there were only two models within the series:

501 is the series of the tractor and the 541 is a sub model is the series. The 541 has a 4 speed transmission. There are at least 3 sub models the 541,551,561 and then depending on year there could also be the 571 and 581. The 551 has a 5 speed and non live PTO and the 561 is a 5 speed and live PTO and the last 2 are SOS transmission

Within the 601 series there is a 661, 641, 671, 621, and various others. within the 901 series there is 961, 971, 941, etc. etc. Same with 861, and 761. The 501 series is different. It is a very specialized variant of the 741, and as such it has very few sub-models. All of the 5X1s are four speeds, with no SOS or 5 speed ever built. There probably were some variants that could have led to a 521 or something like that, but it was a specialized low production series which is hard to find and tend to be sought after. The 541s were built for a few years after all the other XX1 models had been switched over to X000 models.

Respectfully I can find no evidence that Ford tractors in the 501 series had anything other than the four-speed transmission meaning the 541 and 541-4.
