Ford 531 exhaust

I have a neighbour with a 531 industrial with a low exhaust which is not good for haying. Would like to convert it to upright exhaust.
Question: can I simply turn the manifold upside down and cut a hole in the hood?

No, different manifold for a vertical exhaust. That's a new enough model to also use the gooseneck to move the exhaust farther forward.
It doesn't seem like much, but it does make it quieter for the operator.
You should seriously consider buying a hood with the hole already in it. Hoods without holes are hard to find.

So by a gooseneck you mean to use the original manifold and weld up a 180 degree bend and bring it up outside of the hood? Can do easily but are the vertical exhaust manifolds readily available? where? how much? Thanks.

The vertical manifolds are still readily available. I think that he meant S-pipe, not goose neck. The first generation of 3 cylinder Ford tractors (2000/3000/4000 series) used a pipe that went straight up from the manifold through a hole in the hood to the muffler above the hood. The later ones (x600 & x610 series) used an S shaped pipe to move the muffler, and the hole through the hood, farther forward. Your 531 was made at the same time as the x600 series farm tractors and so it would use the same vertical exhaust as the 2600/3600/4600 farm tractors.
