Ford 601 134 engine valve adjustment

I’m working on a 1957 601 with a 134 engine. I’ve been busy relining my cylinders, replacing the valves, installing new pistons and rings, replacing rod bearings and was getting ready to adjust the valves last night. I noticed that the normal manner of adjustment won’t work, as it looks like the adjuster is just a bolt that turns in and out of the rocker with no slotted head bolt in the middle. I know the tractor ran from the 70’s until it was parked with a busted lift a few years ago(I grew up on it). The valve adjusters don’t even seem to be threaded for bolts in the center. Has anyone seen adjusters like this?

Yes, I have this style on at least one of my Fords. Easier to adjust than with the lock nuts. The threads are tight enough that the adjustment doesn't change, not a problem.

Many thanks for the input and reassurance! I was wondering why mine was different than every Jubilee and 601 that I’ve seen on the “tubes”.

They are self-locking hex head adjusting screws. They should require a fair bit of force to turn them due to the interference of the threads. Used on a number of engines. As pomester said they are easier to deal with than a screw and locknut.

I soaked the head and rockers in oil for a few months after finding a whole bunch of rust locking cylinders 2@3 from sitting. When I turned one last night trying to make sure they wern’t rust welded together like the rings were into the sleeves, it took a pretty good twist. I appreciate the reaponse!
