Ford 601 Diesel

I am wondering if the cam, cam gear, the fuel pump gear, and the fuel pump, is the same on the 601 and 801 diesel. I am looking to buy the 641 for parts. My 841 stopped in the hay field and is making a noise in the front cam gear area, when you crank over the engine. I haven't tore into it yet, to know the specific problem, but can pick this 601 up for $600. The 641 has a slung rod. Also, what am I expected to see, when I tare into the front of engine?

Mathew, you can research the part numbers on the CNH website. I bet that the problem in the front of your motor is going to be loose governor parts, which I can't really see being a big deal.

Mat.
The gear train on the front of the 144 &,172 diesel used in the 601 ,801 is the same.
The governor on the diesels is not behind the timing cover, their is a spacer on the end of the crank where the governor use to be.
the governor on the diesel is in the injector pump.
the 601 ,801 injector pump will bolt up to the engine ok. But I think the 801 pump may have been
turned up a little.

Just got an 801D in today to check out. It too had engine noise in front cover. Upon teardown found that the hyd pump locked up breaking the camshaft. So if the camshaft is broken you need to figure out why. The cam, gears are the same.

Use this one: http://www.external_link/newhollandparts.aspx. Type your model nr. into the search box and find it on the list that is generated (there will most likely be a long list of similar model nrs. including implements), click on it and you will then be able to select from the various areas (i.e. fuel system, engine, etc.). You can blow up the drawing, print it, or whatever. Very useful.

Diesels don't have governors up front. It's all done in the injection pump.

The issue is probably camshaft or gears related. Hard to say, it could even be the water pump.

I took the hydraulic pump off today and found the gears on the cam shaft ground off in one area. The pump seemed O.K., it turned fine. What I can't understand is why this gear messed up if pump didn't lock up. Or, does the pump lock up under pressure? I am pretty sure the cam shaft is broken too, cause the gear didn't turn when I turned engine over by hand. I haven't gotten to the other end yet, still trying to get the last of the hay in.

Well, you have to split the tractor to change the cam. There are bolts you need to get to that are behind the flywheel. Bummer!

You may as well put in a new transmission input shaft seal, check the pressure plate and clutch, etc. while you are back there.
