Ford 601 differential numbers

Hi, I have a rear end housing that I thought was for a 601, but the pinion shaft spline is wrong I think. Casting number on it is 310447 any clue what it fits? Thanks for looking.

They changed the spline count partway through the production run of the '01 series tractors, so depending on the exact serial number, it could have either the coarse or the fine splines.

I have this from a 1955 MPC but does not have the 600 included. I will dig out my 1958 MPC later and see what is in it. Don't go by casting numbers. Were used across different modules PLUS are NLA so is a moot point. It's what is inside that matters.

I bought a 601 that had a bad ring and pinion. Next I bought this rear end from a 601 I was told, mine has fine spline and the one I bought is coarse splinded. No problem I said, picked up a coarse splinded center shaft and welded the two halfs { never tried the coarse shaft on the rearend} went to put it together and the coarse shaft is 3/16 to small for the rearend!

Is yours a Select-o-Speed or a manual gear tractor? There was a change over in the spline count early in the 01 series, 1958 S/N around 46K (I think) maybe October/58 please don’t quote me on that. There is also, I believe, a difference between the Select-o-Speed and the manual gear tractors. What do the hubs center look like, nut, smooth or 2 lugs? Maybe it’s an axle from a Golden Jubilee.

I guess I'm starting from scratch again. All of the books I have show the 4025b or c casting numbers that's why this one caught me off guard with the odd numbers. Brakes, gasket, cover all the same. I'll check the hubs, No nuts I know but hate to tear it down for ring gear numbers and such. I'll get back to you.

It was the later 3 cylinder thousand series models that had different gear ratios for their differentials for the S-O-S transmissions vs. the manual transmissions. The pre-1965 4 cylinder tractors had the same differential gears whether they were manual transmissions or S-O-S, but they all had the changeover from coarse splines to fine splines at some point, but I can't name the date or serial number where the change occurred..

You might consider finding a rear axle from an 801 or a 4cyl 4000. A little heavier and stronger and will bolt right in. I happen to have an extra one if you live on the east coast.

Here are a few pics of the rear-end. I wonder if Robert's parts sent me the wrong coarse thread shaft? Everything looks right.

That rear end you show is the smaller series. The top link connection extends out from the rear. The top link connection is sunken into the housing on the larger rear housing.

My parts book shows for the pinion gear assembly part number NCA-4609-B for the 4 & 5 speed 600 for years 55/58 prior to serial number 54166, part number NDA-4609-B for the 4 & 5 speed 600 for years 55/58 prior to serial number 54166, part number 313212 for the 4 speed 601 for years 58 and on after serial number 54165; and part number 313214 for the 4 speed 801 for years 59 and on after serial number 54165. Curiously it does not list 5 speed part numbers for the 601 and 801 pinion gear assembly.

Parts book shows four different splined couplers for the trans to the pinion, but uses different names. The four speed uses the name coupling assembly part number NCA-4685-B (8.36" long) for years 55/58 prior to serial number 54166, part number 313218 for years 58/ after serial number 54165. The five speed uses the name tube part number NDA-4685-A (3.39" long) Opt. W/B (whatever that means) for years 55/ ; and tube part number NDA-4685-B (3.39" long) Opt. W/A (whatever that means) for years 55/. There is no serial number split in part numbers for the five speed application.

You have that backwards. The larger housing has the recess where the ears for the top link rocker are connected. That is so the geometry between the lower lift arms and the top link is the same between the smaller 6xx/2000 series and the larger 8xx/4000 series.

Every thing points to , they sent me a naa/Jubilee coupling and it is not the same a 601 series. so, I will have to find the right shaft and reweld it to the fine spline front.

Doh! Thanks Sean for the correction!
