Ford 601 Smoking

I have a Ford 601 Workmaster. I used the tractor back in October and everything was fine. It set in the barn until this last weekend when I needed it. I put some gas in it and finally got is started but it smokes BAD! It has never smoke like this before. I have let it idle about 20 minutes and it is still smoking terribly, It is definitely burning oil. I love the tractor (owned it about 8 years), but I am not much of a mechanic although I have been able to fix everything that has went wrong in the last eight years. Can someone tell me what is wrong with it and what I need to do?

Well, once they start smoking it isn't too long before they start drinking, cussing and staying out till the wee hours of the morning....

It sounds like the rings have dried out and gummed up so it isn't sealing out the oil. I would remove all spark plugs and put in 2-3 oz of 50-50 mix ATF-Diesel. let that sit for 24 hours, crank it to clean it and see how that goes.

Also, check that you didn't leak a lot of fuel into the oil while it sat.

While I would let the cyls soak int he solvent/oil mix. I'd also check / change the oil.. sometimes gas leaks past a bad fuel valve and can leak past the cyl.. and then dilute the oil.. which can make it smoke.. don't run it like that if it is the case.. don't run it till the oil is changed.. and don't change the oil till after you soak the cyl's..

Go to the auto parts store and get 2 pint cans of Sea Foam. Put one whole can in your crankcase and the other in a full tank of fresh fuel.

Run the tractor for about 10 minutes and turn it off. Let it sit overnight. Get some ventilation cause you will need it for the next step.

Fire it back up and run it at PTO speed for another 10 minutes and turn it off again.

Drain your oil and refill. Over the next 20 or so hours you should notice a significant difference in engine performance......if crud is your only problem....nothing mechanical.

Rings are probably sticking form sitting. Put a little bit of transmission fluid in the cylinders and let it sit a day or 2. Start it up and run it and also put about a QT. of it in 5 gal. of gas and that will help loosen them up more and clean up the rust and carbon. Also check and change the oil since it could have gas and or water in it from sitting that long

Before looking for more serious problems, remove the air filter hose at the carburetor and restart the engine. Also look for evidence of oil in the air filter tube.

Over time, condensatioin can raise the oil level in the cup enough that the engine draws oil into the carburetor from the air filter.

Also check the engine oil level to verify that it is not substantially overfilled due to, e.g., carburetor run through.
