Ford 601 Workmaster question

I have a late model 601 Workmaster (1962 by the vehicle number) and in addition to the normal 4 speed transmission, it has a shuttle type transmission and all I can find is that it was an 'available' option. It also as original power steering. I would be interested to know if folks could share any information on how common this transmission option was. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Sounds like the Sherman reversing auxiliary transmission. By the time of the '01 series, Ford was installing them at the factory. In earlier years, they were a dealer installed option only. It was a fairly common option on tractors that were originally purchased for loader work. They are not as common as the step-up/step-down combo transmissions, but they are not rare.

Thanks Sean. This one was not a separate transmission (LIke I have seen in some other tractor models) but rather lever on the left side of the case with a noticeable lever sticking up fairly high\, (higher than the typical shifting lever) and I have seldom seen that extra shifting lever in pictures so just wanted to learn more.

All of the Sherman auxiliary transmissions (step down, step up, combo and reverser) were designed to replace the input shaft of the 3 or 4 speed transmissions. They all had handles coming out the side of the bell housing except for some early ones that had cable controls. Here's a linkl to some more details on the Sherman shuttle/reverser transmission:

This may also be of interest to the OP. At some point Ford bought Sherman and their auxilliary transmissions and backhoes became included in the Ford parts catalog. Below is a link the the Forward & Reverse Transmission. Also there are two sections for the levers, browse the diagram selection box.
