i have a 631 ford tractor that i am getting ready to do a clutch job on and noticed that the shifter will pop out of the housing about 3 inches. im not sure if there is a keeper on the shifter or if im gonna have to pull the tranny completely apart to fix. any one had this problem or know how to fix it. thanks for any help

Should be a pin in the ball on the shifter.Either the pin is worn or the slot that it rides in is worn.Pull the shifter plate and check.

is the pin your talking about on the shifter above the inspection plate or iside the tranny. i can see the pin above the inspection plate and it is still there. i just started doing it about a week ago. thanks chris

The pin I"m talking about is in the gear shift handle just below the cover plate for the gear shifter. The shifter will come out if you remove the cover plate that is located between your feet when you are sitting on the tractor.About 8 bolts holds it on.And do not move any gears after the plate is removed.
