Ford 640 Governor

My 640 I rebuilt a bunch of years ago is developing governor problems, It is especially bad sticking at high RPM after plowing through ome rough ground and is generally non responsive. I've adjusted the thing over the tears but I'm adjusted out of patience. SO I think I'm going to get a kit and rebuild the governor, This early model has theb Novi Flyball governor unit. If I replace this unit with the newer Pierce flyweight unit what modifications must I do. I see the Pierce unit is readily available on Ebay for $85 plus or minus but on few listing they mention the need for a compensating rod and spring NCA99810A. I've got all the manuals and parts books but there is always some gremlin waiting to pounce when lest expected. Would you use the new Pierce unit or try to pick up new pieces for the old system? The front pulley must come off of course, but how much trouble is it to remove the crank nut and what if any hidden problems have any of you encountered in doing this job. I'm also thinking of etting up the front for a hydraulic pump but haven't found any parts or info for that option. Appreciate your thoughts on the rebuild, always found invaluable advice from you guys that saved me time, trouble and embarrassment!!!

IMHO a six ball governor is a more responsive governor than the doule fly weight..The thrust bearing and the six ball are the only things available new for the Novi governor, so I would check things over real close, including the linkage, and the throttle stop. I have never noticed any difference in either spring .A 1"5/16 wrench and BFH will loosen the big nut with a couple of good cracks BUT, either governor will not come out without moving the axle support forward
