Ford 640 Rotor

55 Ford 640 (converted to 12 volts)

Trying to "renew" my distributor on my Ford 640. I added new plugs, wires and cap today, but I couldn"t seem to figure out how to get the rotor off so that I can put the new rotor (and capacitor) on.

I have the shop manual, I"ve found the exploded view of the distributor, but it doesn"t seem to help me much at all.

Any clues on how to get that rotor off would be GREAT. Do I need to pull the whole distributor?

The rotor should simply pull off, allowing you to lift off the dust cover, exposing the points.

As Bob says but at times they can stick a little bit and be hard to get off. Some times a light tap on one side or the other helps but be careful not to brake the dust cover if you try that. Also there should be a little spring clip under it be careful not to loose it. You will need to remove the spring clip before you can remove the dust cover. Another thing that maybe your problem is some one could have rigged up some sort of thing to take the place of that clip and that could be causeing you the problem

Okay, great, I wasn't losing my mind after all.
I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

Once I get this all worked out, it'll be on to investigating why my battery isn't charging.

Got the rotor off. I guess I didn't use enough muscle due to the fear of cracking that dust gaurd in half.

I got the points and capacitor in, new rotor on, new cap on, new wires and new plugs on.

Now she won't start. I verified 'spark' but now I think my battery is toast (have been thinking that for a long time now anyway). Even after a fresh re-charge, the battery goes limp after just two-three times of trying to start the tractor.

I'm pretty certain I didn't spin the cam while taking off the rotor and putting the new one on (timing).

She's started before, and I started her up to get her in the garage for the tune-up. She's always started s-l-o-w though. Charge-to-battery is my next ivestigation. (also discovered a fuel/tank leak during this job. See my fuel leak post with a picture)

After I put the new plugs, wires, points, and rotor on she didn't want to start. Turns out my battery was toast.

I put a new battery on her and WOW, she starts right up and purrs like a kitten.
