Ford 640 serial number missing!

I know the serial number on a 1955 Ford 640 is supposed to be right behind the starter on the engine block. Well, mine seems to have a 3x5 inch 1/4 inch steel plate welded over that area. I can"t imagine why unless someone was trying to hide the serial number. Any ideas?

NO.. the sn is not found on the engine block.... it is found on the trans bellhousing flat, aft of the starter.

if you have a plate welded on your engine block.. I'd say the prev owner was trying to repair a crack or breakthru...
