Ford 641 broken pto

I have a 1957 641 that has a broken pto shaft. I have a replacement part but cant get the old pto out. It broke at the rear when i raised my bush hog too high. I have the rear most section out but the part inside the tractor wont budge. I have removed the sideplate ant tried to drive it out but no luck. Any sugestions?

The bearing retainer and a peice of the shaft. I used a pair of chanel locks to reach in and pull on the shaft but it wouldnt budge. Then took the pto lever side plate off and grabbed it but it wouldnt budge. The used a long screwdriver to tap it from the pto lever hole towards the rear and it just wont budge.

Shaft must be twisted, get access to remaining shaft and introduce it to a sawzall.

Possibly when something hard like that snaps, the force of the “explosion “ may have driven the broken piece into the shallow part of the splines where it normally would not go. Or, the shaft is bent and interfering with another part.

If the broken part is near enough to the rear hole, try reaching in there with vise grips and get a bite on the end of the shaft and try to pull it out. Substitute the thumb screw for an eye bolt so you have something to pull on. You may have to have a helper pull on it with a pry bar while you pound on the shaft from inside the tractor.

I had a similar situation getting the bushing out of the transmission of a Farmall M. I would suggest welding a piece of half inch all thread rod to the adjustment nut on a pair of vise grips and drill a hole in a piece of flat stock and hold it across the hole in the back of the tractor. Tighten the vise grips on the shaft to be pulled out. Screw up a nut on the all thread rod and see if it pulls loose. I hope this makes sense to you. Go to Harbor Freight for the cheapest pair of vise grips, because they will probably get trashed. Ellis

Can you get access to the broken end of the shaft with a welder? Perhaps you can weld a bolt to the shaft, then use a puller or slide hammer to remove the shaft.
