As you know this tractor has a 6 volt system, however, most owners experience starting problems expecially during cold weather. Additionally it appears in my case the 6 volt battery has a short life.

Any one had experience with changing to an 8 volt battery. Big question, how about problems with any other components in the 6 volt system?

I had a '53 Allis Chalmers WD with battery ignition. I put an 8 volt battery in it didn't change anything else, worked just fine.

Yes I switched to an 8 v battery in my 640 back in 2000 . That battery lasted 5 yrs . In that 5 yrs I burnt out 1 headlite . So I feel it was well worth it . Now be sure to take the VR with you when you buy the 8 volt battery . Take them to a good auto electrical shop & have them tweak the VR so its putting ample current back into the battery . Another good idea which I did was take the genny with you also & have the system checked together . Good luck & God bless, Ken

Yes it can be done but at best its a bandaide fix. Most 6 volt systems will not keep it at full charge so you have a 8 volt battery that is only charged to say 7.5 volts. Yes it can be done but in the long run why not go to a 12 volt system and be done with it

As stated before 8 volt batt. works great, just have the voltage regulater tweeked to give a full charge to the system,it will work just fine.

I bought a 8N a couple of years ago that had a 8 volt battery in it. It charges in the low 9 volts so the VR must have been tweeked. Working fine. David...........
