About two months ago I picked up a pretty rough ford 740-5. Serial number brings it to about 1956. I got it running got better rubber on it, did a fluid change and tune up. I'm currently rebuilding the steering box and am going to get the steering cylinder and control valve rebuilt. It's a cool tractor and I picked it up for $500 so it's been a fun project so far.

Was always under the impression the factory wide front ends on the row crops didn't come until the 1957 model year.. What is the serial number of this tractor?

I'll have to look, I deleted the picture in my phone of the 740-5 stamp with the serial number,. I could be wrong it's very hard to read the serial number

There is an occasional poster on here that is doing something with the row crop power steering perhaps building replacement cylinders. You can expect to pay $600.00 for the cylinder repair, and IIRC his offering saves significant money.

The parts sites shows the wide front end starting on 1/1/67, and it lists them for both the 7x0/9x0 and 7x1/9x1 models.

Any idea who? i would love another option. I was told around 500, and would love to same some money.

ooticamitica, I wish I had put the guys info on my contact sheet. I have done some looking around but no success. Try starting a new thread about help with 4 cyl rowcrop power steering and perhaps some one else has his info.

(quoted from post at 20:30:27 12/30/19) The Ford parts book 1953-1959 list's the wide front end as starting in 1957. Is 1/1/67 a typo?

Yes, sorry, that was a typo. Meant to type 1/1/57.

Two piece pedestal didn't come into effect until during the production run in 1957. Even the early '57's carried the one piece pedestal

I have no direct knowledge, but according to the parts site the single piece pedestal ended production on 12/31/66, and the two piece pedestal and the wide front axle option both became available on 1/1/67.
