ford 740

Their is a few 740 fords coming up for auction and i was wondering if any one on here knows much about them and their value range. one has a wide front, i have not been able to find much info on the 740 model if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be muchly appreciated thanks

They are great tractors. Very reliable.
They have the 134 CI engine and only came with 4 speeds.
Less common than the 900 which had a 172 CI engine and more transmission choices. Some with live PTO. The 700/900 only came in narrow front. The later 701/901s could be had either wide or narrow front.
Value? It's hard to say without knowing more about condition - tin, tires, paint, blowby, etc, etc.
They don't have quite the same value as their lower, shorter utility sisters - 600, 800, etc.
Just a SWAG here but an "average" 700 would start at $2500 and go up to maybe $3500 if in good running condition with average but decent tin, etc.
Collectors might pay a bit more for one because they are less common.
If you took a poll here the NF might be more liked than the WF. NS will turn so sharp is partly why and the wheel base is shorter.

In addition to what Ultradog has said, the front pedestal on a 700/900 could have been replaced at some point with the later style pedestal from a 701/901 series and could now have a wide front, but it wouldn't have left the factory that way.

The late 740s could come either way. I have a 1956 740 serial number in the 88,xxx's that is stamped 740-5 with the wide front under it. I've never ran across another one that is a 1956 with the factory wide front end. I ran across a 960 last month that was 1956 serial number 101,xxx that was 960-5. I also have the factory proof photo showing all 3 front ends (narrow front 2 wheel, wide front, and single front wheel) in front of a 960. This photo is dated September or October of 1956. They are hard to come across but there were some of the 700/900 with wide front.

The front end option for the wide front or single wheel was a 1957 running production change, As per my 1957 supplement
manual, so the wide front could have left the factory that way. I Have hear of some late 1956 models have it but can
only go by the book.
