Ford 753 Backhoe hydraulic question

I have a "63 Ford 4000 Ind. with a 723 loader and a 753 Backhoe. I am having an issued with the backhoe hydraulics. When I move the lift cylinder lever I do not have any downward pressure I do have lift pressure. The boom will drop under it"s own weight but will not apply any downward pressure. The problem started a while ago and was intermittent at first but would start working again after a few attempts. It seems at though the valve just is not sending fluid to the downward pressure side of the cylinder. All other functions seem normal although if I try to operate the other levers while trying to apply downward pressure none of the other functions work. Also the tractor motor does not load any while attempting to apply downward pressure on the lift cylinder. I am assuming the spool valve for the lift cylinder needs to be rebuilt, if so is this a difficult job?

Thanks for reading the long post.

Hi!,Not much to go wrong with the valve spool,If the travel back and forth is the same as the one beside it, It"s probably ok. It"s sounds like everything is ok but your boom lift cylinder. the packing may be blowing out on the inside end of the ram. I"ve seen it many times where packing would hold one direction but leak by the other.-ed

Mark & Ed,

Thanks for you replys, I checked both of your suggestions and it was the circuit relief valve for the down pressure. It was sticking, I cleaned it a reinstalled now I can dig!! I do have some cylinders that are leaking oil so I will learn how to rebuild a cylinder soon.
