Ford 801 eats spark plugs

1962 Ford 801 runs great for a while then fouls plugs and gets difficult to start, brand new set of plugs and it is as good as new again. Will the pertronix electronic ignition and flame thrower coil held fix this problem or should I try something else. Tractor never gets a real workout which I am sure is some of the problem.

If the plugs are fouling it's either running way to rich or it's burning oil.

I agree with Michaels Dad. Instead of putting new plugs in each time
I found that you can rejuvenate the fouled plugs by burning off the
oil/carbon by holding the plug tips in the flame of a hot propane
torch for a bit.

Probably not.

Verify that the ignition system is in good condition, including the spark plug wires.

Are the plugs oil or carbon fouled?

I have a spark plug sandblaster. Since I bought it, I do not remember ever buying new spark plugs.

If you do not have a thermostat, put one in. If the engine does not get to operating temp, that could also cause the problem. You can also try a hotter heat range plug.

Tractor uses very little oil over many hours of use. If I lean the carb out any the tractor looses power?

What brand plugs are you running?? If Champ or auto lite you might want to try a set of NGK3112. My 841S I had starting problem with it and when I switched to the NGK plugs the problem pretty much went away

My old TO35 used to do that eat plugs,
The motor was health, no oil blow by, problem was the carb, it was rich fuel mixture just burns the plugs up fast

Finally got the carb mixture fixed plugs last a long time runs and starts great,

If it's oily more then Carbon, then it's sounds like time to ring it.theres only 2 ways I can think of that oil gets into the plugs, either bad rings, or
the oil air filter is too full and sucking it in through the carb, usually that would eventually clog the carb, making it run bad.

JMOR may be/probably is, up on this, but I read somewhere about ion migration in the plug tips as a function of direction of electron flow. If the
electron leaves the ground lead as I recall, being larger, plug life (aka plug gap) is extended over the electron leaving the High Voltage center
terminal. Having the battery + connected to the wrong terminal on the ignition coil (- marked terminal rather than +) could reverse the polarity
of the first big oscillation of the coil forcing the current through the plug in the opposite direction to the design.

Having a neg ground system hooked up to a pos ground or vise versa would do the same thing.

Just some thoughts.....course don't know if that helps a fouling problem.....course if it's fouling because of an incorrect gap caused by
electrode erosion then there may be something to it for this application.

Howdy Dan,welcome to YT. I'm sorry you haven't found a solution for the fouling plugs. I
would have chimed in earlier but I thought one of the people with Guru or expert beside
their names would have give you the solution before now. Frankly.I don't believe there's an
ignition system built that can solve this. There's a couple of people that might be unhappy
if I say much more, therefore I can better help you if you send me an email. Click Modern

Guru was given'N to me I did not earn it so it does not blow my head up like it may do others...

I asked the lady that is the head honcho she said it was part of the software package there was nuttin she could do about it..

Sadly I think the labeling/post count system on YT is a crock of chit myself SO don't point the issue towards me I answered his question and sent him a link so MAYBE he can figger it out...

To answer your post YES but there is nuttin we can do about it all can play right are wrong that's the way it is.

WOW! somebody has his shorts all tangled up! Nobody respects him even though he knows that he has the right answer without adequate information to go on. He just can't take the possibility of being seen wrong so he has to hide his "answer" in an email. I bet he even thinks that people remember some of his posts in the past.
