Ford 841 Gas

Maybe yes and maybe no. If it has the old rope seal there is a tool that you can use to remove and install the seal. It is call a "Sneaky Pete." If your tractor as the neoprene seal the you may be able to work it out. The pan will have to be dropped, the journal caps loosened to allow the crank to drop a bit, and the end journal removed. Are you sure it is the rear main? Where is the oil leaking from? If it's coming out the weep hole on the bottom of the trans, it may be a trans input shaft seal. I have also read of the cam shaft cover gasket leaking. To me it was a frustrating job, but it worked until I rebuilt the engine. One of the problem areas is the side seals. If you go to the "Ford Forum" there are many posts in the archives giving instructions on how to do it. Hope this helps.

Just split it.

Then you can replace that oily clutch too. It really isnt that hard- you just need a spot out of the weather to work in.. If this little lady can do it, surely you can too!
get er done

If you decide to split it do not block the rear and roll the front. Block the front and roll the rear using a wheeled trailer jack bolted to the rear housing through a rigidly mounted bracket. It is much safer since most people do not have a "cherry picker" or engine crane, but everyone can pick a trailer jack up while at any auto parts store or farm store, and drill some holes in some steel stock.

One thing to also consider, a leaking rear main can be a symptom of more serious problems.

If the main bearings are loose, or there is excessive blow-by, a new seal will only be a temporary fix.

If it's a rope seal, all the more likely it will pound it out again.

Rope seals are an exacting science to install. Be very careful not to cut it too short, or too long and get strings under the cap.

If you decide to put in a new rope seal first watch a Youtube video about changing a rope seal in a Holden V8. It is very comprehensive.

(quoted from post at 13:03:14 10/23/19) Leaking out of inspection plate and it?s motor oil.
How would I know?
Thanks
Ken

Sal, I think that I understand your question. If it is yellow it is transmission oil, if it is the same color as your motor oil on your dipstick it is motor oil.
