Ford 850 . . . maybe?

New to me Ford 850 - at least that's what the Engine block says. It is the 5-speed transmission, and when I ran a brush hog, it overran when clutching and pushed me a little - as expected.
So, doing an oil change yesterday, I noticed a few things, the cylinder head is blue - a replacement. More intriguing, the clutch rod clevis has two holes. Currently, I believe, set to the shorter of the two. Now this tractor must have done some woods work, its banged up on the bottom, and the footboards are both abused. It's possible the rod was bent and replaced with one from an 860. What's an easy way to tell a live power transmission from one that's not?
I don't have any PTO equipment here to test . . .
 
If you can push the clutch about half way down and you can shift gears with the PTO running it's live. I had an 850 and the PTO stopped when I clutched. There are plenty of people on here that know a lot about tractors. They'll probably chime in if I'm wrong.

If the bush hog pushed the tractor forward when you pushed in the clutch, it is not live PTO. Non-live PTO is officially called transmission driven PTO, which means that it gets its power from the transmission counter shaft and will provide its rotational momentum back into the transmission drive line when you push in the clutch and apply the brakes. Live PTO is driven directly by the engine using a separate clutch that is not connected to the transmission drive line at all. So when you push in the clutch and apply the brakes, live PTO cannot push the tractor forward.
 
Sean, that's what I originally thought . . . but I thought I read a post here that said if the clutch rod were in the short position, the PTO clutch was disabled? That must not be correct then

Easy to test. Move the pin to the other hole, and give it a try. If the pin is in the hole where the two stage clutch is operational the pedal is almost straight up and the transmission is disconnected when the pedal is pressed half way. Press to the floor board and both the transmission and the PTO are disengaged.
 
One test you can do with the mower attached if the pto clutch is stuck
Push the clutch pedal all the way down
If you can engage the pto and the mower doesnt turn it’s a non live pto
If you can not engage the pto without a lot of gear grinding it’s a live pto transmission with a stuck pto clutch

If it is a Ford 850, you will not have live PTO. A 860 will.
 
There was some misinformation about a week ago even by me. One of my senior days.

But if you have a live PTO and the fact that the clutch rod hooks to the clutch pedal on the opposite side (pivot point) from where your foot is the clutch rod has to hook at the shortest connection point. This raises the clutch pedal higher almost straight up IMG_6970.jpeg

If your transmission is marked with the 850 model number it is possible the transmission was rebuilt with 860 parts but very unlikely.

Push the clutch all the way down while motor is running.
If the PTO can be engaged without grinding the clutch is working.
Now put the transmission in gear.
If the PTO starts to spin as the clutch is released (about halfway) and the tractor doesn’t move you have a live clutch.
It the tractor and PTO starts to move at the same time you have a non live (transmission driven) PTO.
If you use a brush cutter with a non live PTO you need a over running clutch on the PTO shaft because the transmission drive and the PTO drive are hooked together and the momental force of the brush cutter will push the tractor even with the clutch down.

The model number and serial number are on the transmission bellhousing, not on the engine block.
 
Showcrop . . . this makes sense. In an earlier thread, someone asked about whether they had a live or dependant PTO - he was advised to check the clevis. Not all advice is good!
I'm still learning about these tractors, and I appreciate all the experienced and knowledgeable people sharing what they've learned. Meanwhile I'm dealing with a spin-on oil filter leak. Learned on other posts I likely need a new o-ring behind the adapter.
