It is most certainly a matter of opinion. Been around and owned both but with today's gas I like the diesel better.

Those pre-1965 4 cylinder diesels were originally designed as gasoline engine, and then modifications were designed into them to allow them to run as diesel engines. They will not perform as well as other diesel engines that were designed from the ground up as diesel engines, but the only real problem that I have heard of is the early ones without the balancers were prone to breaking the crankshafts.

Gasoline versions produce about 10% - 12% more PTO HP than the converted gasoline diesel versions.
