Ford 861 12 Volt Generator charging problem

861 with 12 Volt generator - dash light is always on. Installed different rebuilt 12 Volt generator but the dash light still comes on. Resident expert neighbor says it is the voltage regulator. Where can a voltage regulator for a 12 volt generator be found? Thanks in advance for the help.

While some of these other guys will chime in and tell you how to test the system rather than just changing good parts; The 12V regulator can be had from several places.

The old Ford part # is 2900446
New Holland has a updated # of CONF10505A Tisco dealers sell it under this same #.
Crosses to Napa VR953 and BWD R221. Places like Orielly's and Advance Auto sell the BWD brand.

John gave you the regulator info, in case it is bad.

Now.. first.. lets do a couple tests. slip belt off the genny, jump battery hot to armature and field. genny should spin. if she does, slip belt back on and start tractor and set to half throttle. if the charge lamp is still on, then jump bat hot to field.. if that makes lamp go off, and a vom across the battery says voltage went up, but lamp comes back on when you unjumper ( and voltage goes down ), then vreg field circuit is bad.

if no charge with that jumper, then jumper bat hot to arm AND field.. that should make a charge show up on a vom across the battery IF the motor test passed.

If this works, then the cutout int he reg is bas as well as the field circuit possibly being bad.

if either are bad you will need to replace the vreg.

I took the old generator in to the electrical shop and the first thing they said was 'I bet your voltage regulator is shot'. It was pulling heavy from 'field' and only putting out a few amps. I will follow your advice Sound Guy to check it out. Going to buy a new voltage regulator regardless it sounds like. Thanks!

i'd be leary of shops that say 'I bet'.

there are specific tests i told you to do to positively ID the root cause.. no betting or guessing.

not sure why people ask questions.. then don't follow thru and do something else??!!!??!

He brought the old genny in to the shop, not the whole tractor, so all the guy at the shop could do was give his best educated guess (bet) based on the state of the old genny. I agree with you on not following through on the tests that would give him a definite answer though.
