Ford 8N bendix recovery

Hello,

I needed to replace the starter and bendix on my 8N. I took out the bolts and the starter wouldn't budge. I am talking solid. I ended up taking the front cover off and then sliding off the middle metal sleeve / housing. I slid the inner cylinder of the starter forward to see if it would loosen. It did not. So I slid it back and heard something drop inside.

I took a pry bard and used the skinny end to put just enough pressure on top of starter to get it over fly wheel and it came right off no problem no damage.

When it came out the bendix was gone. The bendix has fallen into the tractor behind the fly wheel. How can I get the bendix out easily / with minimal effort so I can put my new starter and bendix on the tractor and ride off into the sunset?

Only way will be to split the tractor. Pieces I MIGHT leave in there, but never the whole thing.

I had mine fall apart inside the tractor. A few weeks prior
to this happening I purchased an inspection camera for
some sewer work. It came with a hook attachment and a
magnet attachment. Took about an hour of frustrating
fishing but I got the pieces out. Sure beat splitting the
tractor. (Mine also has a hole in the side that I assume
was for an auxiliary transmission at some point. That
helped some. You would still be able to get to it without
the extra hole though.) Below is a link of the camera I

I brought a N with a hole like that are you sure its not factory : )

I would find it hard to leave the old drive inside the housing, remove the steering box and retrieve it. Remove the hood lift the steering box up and go hunting.

This has always been on my radar as I fight those drives I think I could have had a Denso.

Yes, because they weren't clearly being extreme to be disingenuous. Splitting the tractor is not the only method. And i said in OP a moderately easy way. Suggesting I split the tract and that is is the only way is disingenuous. They were being extreme with their verbiage and giving me the method with the most work after I clearly said I didn't want to go that way. Definition of trolling.

When I said "joke" I was being sarcastic.

Let me break it down in very simple terms for you since you seems to need them.

I asked for an easy way to retrieve. I alluded to the fact that I did not want to split the tractor, that I wanted a simpler method.

Alluded means - to suggest or call attention to indirectly; hint at.

Them suggesting the hardest method possible was just them intentionally being contrarian. It was them misdirecting their frustration over having gone through a difficult situation and feeling like the world should have to go through difficult situations to make life "fair".

They were being disingenuous. That word means - not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does.

They knew I didn't want to split the tractor and they knew splitting was not the only way. That is trolling.

Hopefully i use small enough words and gave the definition for any you probably do not know.

I am not good with twisting werds but have no problem fix'N my are your tractor... I have learned a hole lot doing it the hard way. Most of my tricks were learned doing it the hard way no fancy werd could replace that experience.

I often wonder why Henry Ford who designed these tractors to be service in the field by farmers with a simple set of tools.... didn't design the thing with a good sized inspection port under there right where that big ol' hole is. Imagine how handy that would be.

I regret that you have taken some advice as being contrary to what you wanted, but to some of us "old timers" splitting the tractor could very well be the "easy" way! In the hour spent fishing w/a high tech tool, many of us could have split, fixed, & checked the clutch, throw out bearing & seals & be half way back together again!

With that attitude you're going to get a response to put on a new, aftermarket starter and driver it around and let the bendix
break into sizeable chunks then fish out the pieces with a magnet

I am 78 years young and I can split a 8n in an hour or so. So I do consider it to be the easy way. And like you say check aew other thing while you are there, ring gear is probably shot anyway.
But he can fish all he wants, don't bother me at all!
The easy way for him would be to buy a new tractor!
